The "clerical class" is just a subdivision of those who seek power, and there is much power in virtue signalling. The core problem with these (and many other) organizations is the stain of imperialism, where the organization's survival is paramount to everything else. This in turn attracts the weakness in men, who seek to obtain this power to use for their own selfish ends.
It’s hard for people to read the mandate when they think their eternal salvation is on the line. But in general I agree. There is a certain pragmatism in Easter culture that we have left to the side as we became enamored with their “wisdom traditions”
